Dani Barretto Criticizes ‘Toxic Filipino Culture’ of Obliging Children to Support Parents

Manila, Philippines – Dani Barretto, daughter of actress Marjorie Barretto, has sparked a nationwide conversation by criticizing the “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) culture prevalent in Filipino families. In a recent episode of her podcast, Bare It All, Dani expressed her belief that children should not be obligated to financially support their parents as a form of repayment for raising them.

“You can’t have ‘utang na loob’ for something that they were supposed to do for you,” Dani stated. She emphasized that while sacrifices made by parents are commendable, they should not be used as leverage to demand support from their children later in life.

Dani clarified her stance in a follow-up TikTok video, stating:

“I never said not to give back to your family or not to support them. My point is that giving back should be voluntary, not obligatory.”

She further explained that it is unfair for parents to use their children’s upbringing and education as a means to demand financial assistance, as these are parental responsibilities.

“Parents are supposed to provide food, education, and shelter. That’s their obligation,” Dani added.

Her comments have sparked a debate online, with some agreeing with her perspective, while others believe that supporting one’s parents is a moral duty.

“Giving back should be voluntary, not obligatory. More people should be as open as the content of this podcast. I agree [with] this,” one commenter wrote.

Dani concluded by urging the public to understand her point of view and not misinterpret her words.

“Please stop twisting my words. I love my mother more than my life, and I will spend the rest of my life giving back to her and spoiling her,” she affirmed.
