Atong Ang, Gretchen Barretto eyed as suspects in missing sabungeros case — DOJ

JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Thursday confirmed that businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto are being considered suspects in the disappearance of more than 30 cockfighting enthusiasts.

Remulla said authorities are building a case against Ang and Barretto as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a press conference, Ang denied any involvement in the case, which resurfaced after one of his former employees, identified as Julie Dondon Patidongan, alias “Totoy,” came forward and claimed to have knowledge of the disappearances.

“Wala kaming history na pumapatay ng tao,” Ang said, insisting that he has been cooperating with authorities.
“Kaya ako nandito, ‘yun na ‘yun eh, nakikipag-cooperate na nga ako. Sinasabi ko lahat kung ano ‘yung nalalaman ko… kung tatanungin n’yo ako about the case, kung ano ang nangyari, hindi ko alam ‘yun.”

He also claimed that Patidongan had been asking him for money since February. “Pera lang ang habol n’yan,” he said.

Despite the accusations, Ang said he is willing to assist in the investigation and expressed confidence that his name would be cleared.

On Tuesday night, July 2, Patidongan appeared before the media and accused Ang of masterminding the disappearance of at least 100 sabungeros. He also linked Barretto to the alleged scheme.

As of this writing, Barretto has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
