In a surprising move that has shaken the online content creation community, a newly passed law in the Philippines has raised fears that vlogging as we know it may soon come to an end. The law, which was quietly approved by lawmakers and signed into effect in recent weeks, is already being dubbed by critics as the “Anti-Vlogger Act.”
According to the official summary, the new law aims to regulate “online personalities and influencers who generate income or sway public opinion through digital platforms.” However, its vague language and wide scope have left many Filipino vloggers anxious and confused about what exactly is permitted—and what is not.
The legislation includes clauses that require all content creators with over 10,000 followers to register with a government agency, declare their sources of income, and submit content for periodic review. Failure to comply may result in hefty fines, demonetization, or even imprisonment of up to five years.
Vloggers are also now prohibited from “spreading misinformation,” “mocking public officials,” or “exaggerating facts for entertainment purposes.” These rules, critics argue, are too broad and could be used to suppress free expression online.
YouTubers, TikTokers, Facebook content creators, and even small-time streamers are now scrambling to understand how this law affects them. Many say it threatens their livelihood, especially those who rely on ad revenue and sponsorships to make ends meet.
“I built my channel from scratch. I never thought that one day the government could take it all away,” said one travel vlogger based in Cebu, who asked to remain anonymous. “This law is the death of creative freedom.”
Some politicians, on the other hand, are defending the law, claiming it is necessary to combat the spread of fake news and protect the public. A spokesperson from the Department of Information and Communications Technology said, “We’re not targeting vloggers—we are protecting viewers. Responsible content creation is the goal.”
Still, protests have erupted online. Hashtags like #SavePhilippineVlogging and #StopAntiVlogLaw are trending across X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. Creators are organizing virtual town halls, legal consultations, and petitions to demand amendments or the full repeal of the law.
Several prominent influencers have already announced a hiatus from vlogging, either as a form of protest or out of fear of prosecution. Others have started moving their content to international platforms or even relocating abroad.
Even international content creators are voicing concern. Some warn that this law could set a dangerous precedent in Southeast Asia, where internet freedom is already under pressure in many countries.
Legal experts point out that the law may face challenges in court. They argue it violates constitutional rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of the press. A number of lawsuits are reportedly being prepared by civil rights groups and digital advocates.
The Philippine blogging and vlogging community has grown rapidly over the past decade. What started as a hobby for many has turned into a multi-million-peso industry, employing thousands and serving as a creative outlet for young Filipinos. That boom is now at risk.
Media analysts believe that the law’s passage could also have political motivations. With the rise of digital activism
