In an Instagram post, Nikki Gil shared that her daughter Maddie was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease. She admitted that it was a condition they had never heard of until the diagnosis of their daughter.

“Maddie was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease — something we had never even heard of. And seeing our little girl in pain, hooked to IVs, enduring tests and meds, was the hardest thing we’ve ever gone through as parents,” Gil wrote about her daughter’s sickness.

In the same post, Nikki opened up about her daughter’s struggle with Kawasaki disease. It’s been a difficult time for their family, but they found strength in faith and support from others.

What is Kawasaki disease or mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome?

According to reliable medical websites, the exact cause of this disease is still unknown, and it is not contagious. It “causes swelling, called inflammation, in the walls of small to medium-sized blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body.”

Oftentimes, it affects the heart arteries in children, the same arteries that supply blood to the heart. The symptoms include high fever, swollen hands and feet with skin peeling, and red eyes and tongue. The fever goes up as high as 39 degrees Celsius for five or more days.

Other symptoms are:

  • Belly pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fussiness
  • Joint pain
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Irritation and redness of the whites of their eyes
  • Swollen lymph glands in the neck
  • Irritation and inflammation of their mouth, lips, and throat

With early treatment, a child can get better and have no long-lasting problems. It affects boys more often than girls, but with proper treatment, most children recover.
