“He Got ₱10,000 After a Free Clinic Visit—But It’s Not What You Think!”

The public health drive took place in a rural barangay where access to basic healthcare has long been a challenge. Mobile clinics, staffed with volunteer doctors and nurses, were deployed to offer various services—including dental care, blood pressure monitoring, and what was termed a “late circumcision campaign.”

What caught public attention, however, was the announcement that a handful of lucky participants would be randomly selected to receive financial aid. This was done via a raffle draw held after the procedures.

Breaking the Stigma

When 27-year-old Mark’s number was called, he thought it was a prank. “They called out the number and I just froze. I thought, ‘Wait, that’s me?’ I didn’t even realize I was entered into a raffle.”

It turns out, every adult participant in the procedure had been given a raffle ticket upon registration. Of the over 200 participants that day, only five received the ₱10,000 reward.

According to Barangay Captain Efren Salazar, the raffle was added not just to draw attention to the campaign, but to help break the stigma that older males may feel.

“Some adult men are ashamed to admit they haven’t gone through this tradition,” Salazar explained. “By giving a prize, we turned it into something exciting and positive instead of shameful.”

A Model for Future Health Campaigns?

Experts say this kind of strategy—offering random financial rewards—can work wonders in community health drives. Behavioral economists suggest that humans are more likely to take action when there’s a small chance of a large reward, even more so than when the reward is guaranteed but smaller.

“It creates a buzz,” said health campaign strategist Mariel Tan. “Suddenly, everyone’s talking about the health drive. People who wouldn’t normally care start paying attention.”

What Mark Plans to Do With the Money

In interviews following the event, Mark shared his simple plans for the unexpected cash. “I’ll pay off some debts, help my mom, and maybe start a small rice vending business,” he said with a smile. “It’s life-changing for me.”

But more than the money, Mark says the real reward was the peace of mind. “I’ve been putting it off for years because I was too embarrassed. But now, I feel proud. And maybe this story will help others feel the same.”

The Lesson Behind the Story

Mark’s story reminds us that courage sometimes shows up in unexpected ways—and that real change can happen when communities think outside the box to promote health and dignity.

As the raffle winner humbly walked off the clinic grounds, envelope in hand, many other adult participants followed, not just with bandages but also with a renewed sense of self-worth.

And who knows? Maybe next year’s health drive will draw an even bigger crowd—not just for the chance at money, but for the chance at personal transformation.
