In a feat that has left many in awe, a 70-year-old Filipina grandmother recently achieved what many younger adventurers only dream of — reaching the summit of Mt. Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines standing at 2,954 meters above sea level. But what truly made headlines was not just the physical accomplishment, but the emotional story she shared upon reaching the peak.

Lola Teresita, a retired school teacher from Davao, is no stranger to hardship. Having raised five children as a single mother after her husband passed away early in their marriage, she dedicated her life to family and community service. Now, in her twilight years, she decided to pursue a lifelong dream: to climb Mt. Apo, not just for herself, but in memory of her late husband and as an inspiration to her grandchildren.

“I promised him when we were young,” she said tearfully at the summit, holding a worn photo of her husband, “that one day, I would reach the top for the both of us.”

The climb was no easy task. With the assistance of local guides and a group of supportive hikers, she trained for nearly six months, building endurance and preparing mentally. “There were days when I felt like giving up,” she admitted. “But I kept reminding myself why I started.”

At the peak, surrounded by clouds and the cheers of fellow climbers, Lola Teresita pulled out a handwritten letter and read it aloud — a message to her younger self and a tribute to the love she lost but never forgot. The moment was caught on video, which quickly went viral online. Viewers flooded the comments with tears and messages of admiration, calling her a “true legend” and “living proof that age is just a number.”

Her story is now being used by local tourism and fitness groups to inspire older individuals to stay active and pursue their dreams. “It’s not just about the climb,” she said. “It’s about showing others that life doesn’t end at 70. In fact, for me, it just began.”
